This week: we begin Persuasion.

Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma, completing it in August 1816. She died, aged 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December that year (but dated 1818).

Besides the theme of persuasion, the novel evokes other topics, such as the Royal Navy. The significance here is that two brothers of Jane Austen used persuasion to later achieve the rank of admiral. As in Northanger Abbey, the superficial social life of Bath—well known to Jane Austen—is portrayed extensively, and serves as a background for the second volume. Persuasion marks a clear break with Austen's previous works, for the warm attitude of positive characters she portrays in stark contrast to the often dull heroine:

More than seven years prior to the events in the novel, Anne Elliot falls in love with a handsome young naval officer named Frederick Wentworth, who is intelligent and ambitious, but poor. Sir Walter, Anne's father and lord of the family estate of Kellynch, and her older sister Elizabeth are dissatisfied with her choice, maintaining that he is not distinguished enough for their family. Her older friend and mentor, Lady Russell, acting in place of Anne's deceased mother, persuades her to break off the match.
Now, aged 27 and still unmarried, Anne re-encounters her former fiancé when his sister and brother-in-law, the Crofts, take out a lease on Kellynch. Wentworth, now a captain, is wealthy from wartime victories in the Royal Navy and from prize-money for capturing enemy ships. However, he has not forgiven Anne for her rejection of him.

When Paul finds a box stuck in the hole dug for his backyard swimming pool, the only thing he knows for certain is he has to get it out. He is shocked by the sudden arrival of a strange boy named Henry who demands Paul hand over his newfound treasure. Pauls dog scares off the intruder, leaving Paul to discover the contents of the box: a ring with directions for making wishes. In part II, Paul's Aunt Vickie wears the ring for the afternoon and discovers, being afraid of the water for years, that she can swim. She looses it in the bottom of the pool, Paul's dog Clem finds it and now the dog can talk! Clem gives the ring back to Paul, and now Paul, who has been picked on by a neighborhood bully for years, discovers he can fly! There is so much more to tell so come listen to the ending with us! Charles Dickens is thought by some to be the very first truly "modern" novelist. Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickelby, The Pickwick Papers, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and a host of others dot the literary landcscape like mighty giants, as well as their incarnations in theatre and cinema. His A Christmas Carol is the staple of Christmas where ever it is celebrated.

PALADIN OF THE LOST HOUR

Like a wind crying endlessly through the universe, time carries away the names and deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we were, all that remains is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment.

We all know the movie Groundhog Day about a weird time loop thingie. Tonight I'll present a story by Harlan Ellison called 'Paladin of the Lost Hour'. A story also about a strange occurence in time. And oh yeah, it was a Twilight Zone episode. Story in voice.

Kevin, a shrimpy 7th grader on a school camping trip, decides to sneak out at night to climb the legendary Divine Peak. With the school bully, Bertram, harassing him all the way they both reach the top and find ... a pair of sunglasses. Kevin's glasses have been broken by Bertram. He puts on the sunglasses and amazingly, he can see clearly. During a scuffle back at the base of the mountain, Bertram inexplicably follows Kevin's advice to "go jump in the lake." Various other things happen, all related to random comments made by Kevin. Find out what causes all of these events when Gyro shares this story in voice!

Native Hawaiian Storyteller Lani Ka Mehameha graces the Seanchai Library tonight with tales directly from the islands!

Lani has been bringing Live Voice storytelling to SecondLife for more than six years now. Her voice has been called “hypnotic” and “lilting” and “captivating”. Her writing fuses English and Hawaiian with the sounds of chants and the blending of narrative styles of both worlds. She has presented legends, chants, her stories and poetry in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the Continental United States. She grew up in Hawaii surrounded by classical western and Hawaiian music, art and culture. She speaks French, Hawaiian and English. She has done graduate studies in Hawaiian in the Hawaiian language. As an avid supporter of sovereignty she has lent her support through her voice in song, story and speech to the perpetuation and preservation of her culture.

The novel follows the young ladies and their Mother to their new home, a meager cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak.

Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel-in-letters sometime around 1795. The novel may be read as a parody of the full-blown romanticism and sensibility (now "sensitivity") that was fashionable around the 1790s.

Jane Austen is considered a pioneer of the romance genre of novels, and for the realism portrayed in her novels, is one the most widely read writers in English literature. A work of romantic fiction, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England in 1792 through 1797^, and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, daughters of their father Henry's second wife, Mrs. Dashwood. The sisters are starkly different from each other; Elinor is the epitome of prudence and self-control while Marianne embodies emotion and enthusiasm. Elinor, Marianne, and their younger sister, Margaret, are left in reduced circumstances when their father dies and his estate is passed onto their half-brother, John.

Tonight's story, "A Christmas Memory" is a largely autobiographical story, which takes place in the 1930s, and describes a period in the lives of the seven-year-old narrator and an elderly woman who is his distant cousin and best friend. The evocative narrative focuses on country life, friendship, and the joy of giving during the Christmas season, and it also gently yet poignantly touches on loneliness and loss.

Truman Capote --- the controversial and tiny, child-voiced man of a mega-writer who needs no introduction. His work still resonates with the deadly Southern charm of making love to a sexy stranger during a sudden summer downpour.

A reader must make his or her own way in these lonely Alabama and Louisiana evenings, accompanied by diamond guitars, lost ladies, childhood bullies, soda shops, society types, bad parents, great Christmases, fearful hidings, identity issues, and American dreams both broken and realized.

The Seanchai Library celebrates November 30th, St Andrew's Day (patron Saint of Scotland), with a twist, presenting selections from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of MacBeth (generally known simply as Macbeth). Inspired by accounts from Scottish history in Holinshed's Chronicles (1587), which would have been know to Shakespeare in his day, the events of the story actually have little relationship to their actual historical counterparts.

MacBeth is less about Scotland and more a study of ambition, fate, and consequences. "The Scottish Play" is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy, and is considered by many critics to be his most economically and tightly woven tale.

TUESDAY 15 November at 7pm: Asimov's "Tales of the Black Widowers" with Bear

Did you know Isaac Asimov wrote mysteries as well as about robots? Now is your chance to see another side of the great science fiction writer as Bear Silvershade delves into The Tales of the Black Widowers.
The Black Widowers were based on a literary dining club Asimov belonged to known as the Trap Door Spiders. (Members of the Widowers were based on real-life Spiders, some of them famous writers in their own right.)
Six club members meet once a month at a private room at the Milano restaurant in New York. Each one takes turn to act as host for the evening and brings along a guest for the occasion. The guest may be a friend, relative or colleague from work (women are not allowed at their meetings, though they are very welcome at Seanchai) and after the main course, guest goes on the grill and is asked to justify his existence… and the mystery solving begins. E. B. White's classic first children's book - Stuart Little is no ordinary mouse. Born in a family of humans, he lives in New York City with his parents, his older brother George, and Snowbell the cat. Though he's shy and thoughtful, he's also a true lover of adventure!

E.B. White was an essayist for the New York Times as well as an author of some beloved classic stories. For interesting links to more information on White, visit his Life & Times page on the NYT website.

Frank Baum (think Wizard of Oz meets 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the Little Mermaid!). The Irish Seanchai’s of old were storytellers and historians, bards and poets.

In this tradition this Thursday night the Seanchai Library will be presenting a special 30-minute event titled “The Soulful Poet”, highlighting songs that tell a story. This will be a Live Voice, open-mic event hosted by Gimmya Doobie. Since this is a kick-off event, the first half will be introductions and Doobie reading different selections. Then the mic will be opened to guests. So bring a poem or song and come share your “soul” with us. Or just come and listen to the presentations!
(this event will be followed by Shandon Loring live storytelling at 7pm)

All selections should be about 30 seconds to 3 minutes long.
(as part of the fun, be aware that anyone that goes over 3 minutes runs the risk of being "hooked" off the stage SL style - call it sudden death poetry!)

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR

Songs you hear everyday are very often poetic stories set to music. Listen to some of your favorite soulful songs that tell a story, even a very short story; get a copy of the lyrics, read them to yourself as you would a poem. Without music, but with a “poets soul”, with a "storytellers passion", with feeling! Now be brave and come share the words and your voice with us!

This story by Ray Bradbury is about a class of school children on Venus, which in this tale is a jungle world of constant torrential rainstorms, where the sun is only visible for one hour every seven years. Such an occurrence is imminent. One of the children, Margot, had moved to Venus from Earth five years before the story takes place, and she is the only one in her class to remember sunshine. She has become frail and miserable there, and almost has a nervous breakdown from the anxiety of living with the relentless rain. Join us to hear what happens when the sun comes out. Story in voice.

With your kind help and donations, Seanchai Library was able to pass on $125 US to Heifer International in September! That bought a community honey (bees) and a share of the Cheeses of the World Basket (The gift of a heifer, a goat, a sheep and a water buffalo – four animals that families around the world will use to make mozzarella, feta and hundreds of local and traditional cheese varieties.)
